Imitation isn't flattery, it's cheating

I understand the concept of "what goes around comes around" but a comment I overheard at my son's band concert a couple nights ago has got me thinking...I believe we are headed for a gigantic black hole in the pop culture/fashion industry (that is, if you don't think the pop culture/fashion industry is a black hole unto itself).

Mother to approximately 12 year old son in a loud voice at a quiet moment in the concert: "I don't care what everyone else is doing, you're not getting a mullet!"

What the hell???

Last night as I was listening to NPR, there was a story about department stores catering to the tweens crowd by having a DJ in the store a couple times a week. What is the DJ playing for these tweenie boppers?

Greatest hits from the 80's of course!

Now, it wasn't too long ago that the stores were full of styles from the 70's. If I have to see one single person wearing parachute pants again, I'm going to hurl.

And my own flesh and blood is wearing leg warmers! (No, not my husband, my daughter). Now, I never had the hate of leg warmers but everytime I see them, I'm tripping back to Flash Dance and Fame.

So, can I predict the next big thing? Right here, right now? I'm gonna guess that Grunge Rock will get really big in a few months. Isn't that the next thing on the timeline?

And as we travel down the timeline from the 90's, we are coming perilously close to becoming the snake that eats it's own tail. There will come a day when the styles of the '00 decade are all the rage...Oh! Wait a minute, that's actually the style of the 70's, 80's and 90's...which will eventually bring us 'round again to the beginning. The styles will soon cycle even quicker and quicker, going round and round until they develop their own gravitational pull and become a black hole.

And we all know what black holes do.

They suck.
